Starting a Blog: Beginner’s Guide

start a blog

The first thing you need is a web host.

Simply stated, a web host is a service that provides the technology and services you need to have a website. There are many services out there, but the best choice in my opinion is Bluehost.

As you can see from the information above, the pricing of Bluehost is super affordable. It is the number 1 hosting service recommended by WordPress.org (which is the platform I recommend you to use for setting up your blog, but we will get to that step). Bluehost is one of the largest and most reliable services out there. And for beginner bloggers, it is very user friendly.

Once you are on Bluehost.com and you choose to sign up, they give you three options of plans.

You can see the various options and what they each offer. As a beginner blogger, like I was too, I chose the basic plan. When you are first starting your blog, you may have limited financial resources- so this option is the cheapest and really covers everything you will need.

Once you establish a blog and have started gaining traction, I would then say you should upgrade to one of the other plans. They allow you to easily upgrade at any time.

After choosing a plan you will come to this screen:

What is a domain?

A domain is your real estate. Your little chunk of internet space. It is your actual web page. If you have previously bought a domain, you can use it by typing it into the box “I have a domain name”. Otherwise, you will use the “new domain” box.

You will want to choose a domain name that is simple, but catchy. It should also be somewhat in the realm of primary focus of your blog. When people see the name of your website you want them to have some idea of what they can find on your site.

Many, many domain names are already taken- so don’t get discouraged if the first 10 ideas you come up with are unavailable. Just keep brainstorming.

I had one heck of a time deciding on my blog name initially, but eventually came to the one that suited me and my goals the best!

Choose any extras you want to add on to your plan.

Once you have gotten through all of that- its time to enter your contact and billing information.

Once you have submitted your contact and billing information, you will need to set up an account password.

This is getting exciting now! Here comes the good stuff…

First you will be able to pick a theme for our website. In other words this is the design or layout.

I wouldn’t worry too much about this because you can always change it later. So pick one that stands out to you, and let’s get building!

As I mentioned earlier, the platform you will be using is WordPress.org.

Click, “Start Building” to go to WordPress.

Follow the prompts from here!

Enter the name of your website and description

And continue to follow the prompts.

This is your Bluehost Home Page

This is where you navigate between your sites, email, help links, etc. To go to building your WordPress site you just created click Log in the WordPress in the blue rectangle.

And there you have it! You are on your way to building your blog, congratulations!

Once you are in WordPress, you will be able to explore and familiarize yourself with all of the different features, plugins, etc. Start simple. Start building your foundation of articles before you worry too much about the other details.

I hope this step by step guide helped you as you are beginning your blogging journey!
