Breast milk is the best source of nutrition you can give your baby, and that is why physicians recommend it for the first 6 months of a baby’s life.
There was a point for me, when I was about to quit breastfeeding very early on because I was struggling with breast milk supply and my baby was super difficult to nurse. My experience is exactly why I am here writing to you right now.

First determine your breastfeeding goal
My goal was one year of breastfeeding until my baby could start having cow’s milk.
Your goal may start small, say 3 months or some other people may have big goals of 2+ years! You may end up surprising yourself and far exceeding your initial goal.
Whatever your goal is, write that down. Give yourself that visual representation.
Next, think about why you wanted to start breastfeeding to begin with.
Maybe it was for the nutritional benefits alone, or perhaps for financial reasons. Breast milk is free after-all! Underneath your goal write down these reasons. These are your motivating factors.
Now I want you to think about why you want to quit.
Ask yourself these important questions to really understand yourself and your motivations. Breastfeeding is no small task. It takes a lot of mental preparedness to get through it some days.
Once you have answered all of those questions, you can determine if quitting breastfeeding is really what you want. Or if you are just feeling overwhelmed.

Low Breast Milk Supply
Having a low breast milk supply is one of the main reasons why most people stop breastfeeding. Feeling like you can’t give your baby enough breast milk is super stressful. I get it. But let me tell you something…
It is very unlikely that your body is not capable of producing enough breast milk for your baby.
We are made to breastfeed. Sure, there are definitely medical factors that may prevent someone from breastfeeding, but my focus here is to give you encouragement.
Extenuating circumstances aside, there is very little chance you are not able to meet the demands of your baby’s nutritional needs.
Our bodies know what to do. And if you let your baby feed on demand, you will produce the milk they need.
Supply and Demand
The bottom line of breastfeeding is supply and demand.
When your baby demands more milk (they nurse more), your body will supply more. Your body will accommodate your baby’s nutritional needs, even during growth spurts when their needs suddenly increase.
When your baby needs more milk, they will cluster feed. Trust me, your baby won’t go without. They will let you know when they are hungry.
And the best thing you can do to increase your breast milk supply fast, is to let your baby nurse as often as they want.
Prepare for Breastfeeding
Preparation is key! And there are numerous things you can do to prepare yourself for breastfeeding before your baby is born.
Explore the resources available to you. You don’t want to go into this whole breastfeeding thing without any clue of what you are doing. It will only make your journey more difficult.
Do what you can to prepare yourself before hand. Take a class or two to learn the basics of breastfeeding.
If you don’t feel comfortable going somewhere for a class, there are tons of online resources you can use.
Milkology: The Ultimate Breastfeeding Class
Milkology.org has two online courses for only $19 each.
The course on breastfeeding is about 90 minutes of video tutorials. You download it to your computer, so it is yours forever.
The guide is easy to follow and thorough. The creator of the class teaches you every fundamental thing you will want to know about breastfeeding.
Have the proper equipment.
Having a good breast pump can make it or break it, honestly. Learn from my mistake of being made to believe all pumps are the same. That is far from accurate.
You want to get a pump that is high quality and efficient. When you can’t be with your baby, your breast pump is all you got. So don’t underestimate the importance of getting the right one.
Get good support.
It is really easy to get burnt out by the demands of breastfeeding. Make sure you have a support system in place.
You may find it helpful to take a breastfeeding class and bring your spouse too! They cannot comprehend all that it takes to breastfeed. Having the class may help shed some light on it for them.
When you are in the trenches of exclusively breastfeeding or pumping, there will be times when you will need someone to tell you it’s okay.

Take care of yourself!
To meet the physical demands of breastfeeding, you have to make sure you are taking care of you body. Put good in to get good out.
This means, to provide our baby with the best of nutrients from your breast milk, you need to be putting equally as good nutrients into your body.

The Spectra was not the first breast pump I had. I first went through my health insurance to get my free pump, and I was at the liberty of the medical supply store. What this means is, despite all the research I did on the breast pump I wanted, I got the breast pump they had in stock.

Your baby requires between 18-30 ounces/day depending on age/growth spurts/etc. So, you really only need to pump what they need, but if building a freezer stash is your goal then this guide will help you do that!
