The long and short of it is, yes, this drink can increase milk supply.
Now I want to talk to you about how. Because it’s one thing just to tell you yes. And it’s another things to give you the information behind that statement.
Body Armor Drink Ingredients
In any product for human consumption, the FDA requires all ingredients to be listed for the consumer. And the order in which the ingredients are listed is significant.
The first ingredient that is listed is the most prominent one that makes up the product. For instance, the first ingredient in the Body Armor drink is filtered water. So, that tells the consumer that the majority of this drink consists of water.
The second ingredient listed on nutrition labels, are of lesser quantity within the product. And it continues to decrease as the list of ingredients goes on.
It’s funny because if you realize this, and then go check out some items that claim to be “made with REAL fruit” for example. You have undoubtedly seen this right? And then in the ingredients, about 4 items down the list you might see something slightly resembling a fruit. A company can promote their products to say it has real fruit, even if the amount is miniscule.
A lot of the times, food companies exaggerate their product to seem to be better for you than it actually is. It’s called marketing. And they hope people don’t know any better when they read the labels. (Or don’t read the labels at all for that matter)
With that being said, let’s check out the ingredients label for the Body Armor drink (strawberry-banana flavor).
Ingredients: Filtered Water, Pure Cane Sugar, Coconut Water Concentrate, Citric Acid, Dipotassium Phosphate (Electrolyte), Vegetable Juice Concentrate (Color), Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Gum Arabic, Magnesium Oxide (Electrolyte), Natural Strawberry Banana Flavor with Other Natural Flavors, Calcium D-Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Ester Gum, Zinc Oxide (Electrolyte), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Vitamin A Palmitate (Vitamin A), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), beta-apo-8′ Carotenal (Color), Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12).
First, filtered water is the most prominent ingredient. So that is great, especially if you are the type of person that prefers not to drink plain water. This drink will give you hydration.
Second, pure cane sugar. Well, I didn’t think something could taste so good with having little sugar. So, it is no surprise to me that sugar is the number two ingredient. And just so you know, pure cane sugar is no better or worse for you than plain old “sugar”. It’s all the same. It just sounds fancier to call it “pure cane”.
Note: 18 g of sugar is a lot less than you will find in juices and sodas. So if you are all about those beverages, this would give you a better alternative. It is also a little less than it’s rival, Gatorade. Which ballparks around 21g of sugar.
Third, coconut water from concentrate. Coconut water is great for hydration and electrolytes. The from concentrate is something commonly seen. It means that the coconut water went through production to make it into a concentrated syrup for packaging and transport. Then it was reconstituted to be put into this drink. It loses some of its original nutritional benefit when this happens.
But, as you go along the list of ingredients you will see a lot of electrolyte and vitamins. And the amount of nutrients added in the body armor drink, outnumber those in Gatorade.
The Body Armor drink is marketed as a sports drink. So what’s that mean?
It’s similar to the much more well known Gatorade or Powerade. So much so, that I found it actually right next to them on the shelves in the supermarket. Hello competition!
So, what sort of nutritional value do these sports drinks offer you?
Well, the answer is this.
The Body Armor drink has necessary vitamins and minerals for our body’s basic functions. We need electrolytes to keep living.
When we are exercising vigorously, we sweat. We lose electrolytes.
If we get sick and are vomiting. We are losing electrolytes.
Breastfeeding mamas, give every ounce of their nutrients to their baby. This includes electrolytes.
So, you can see the value that these sports drinks offer us. They obviously aren’t meant to be meal replacements by any means. But, they are great supplements for you when you are depleting your body of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

Is there any nutritional difference between the flavors? I looked at them all. And no. There is no difference in electrolytes between the different flavors.
Is the Body Armor Drink Good for You While Breastfeeding?
To answer this question you have to understand one of the most important concepts about breastfeeding. And that is this.
To give your baby the best nutrients possible from your body, you need to give your body the best nutrients first.
In order to maintain a strong milk supply, you need to ensure you are eating enough calories and good calories… not junk food. You need to be taking certain daily vitamins. And lastly, you need to ensure proper hydration.
The definition of proper hydration is 8-8 ounce glasses of water per day. Drinking the Body Armor drink while breastfeeding would be an excellent way to supplement your hydration.
I don’t think it should replace your water consumption. But it can be a good addition. This drink is mostly water plus the bonus electrolytes.
